Putting a Book Club Together
You have decided to put a book club together. Now what? You will want to make sure everyone is ‘on the same page’, so to speak. Here are some tips for making your book club a big success.
When? First you have to decide how often the club will meet. Usually, book clubs will meet once a month. This gives everyone time to read the next book and keeps the meetings fresh.
What? Next, you should decide what type of book club you want to hold. Will it be an informal get together, where you will share a glass of wine, catch up with friends and chat about the book you all just read? Will it be a serious literary group where you will analyze characters, plots, themes, motivations, prose and symbolism? Or, will it be something in between?
Who? The people you invite to join will depend on what type of club you are setting up. Will it be a meeting of moms looking forward to a night out, or a reunion with literature students? You will want people who are willing to commit and take turns hosting.
Where? Choose where the club will meet. Will you set up a schedule with members so each one takes a turn hosting at their home? Will you meet at a restaurant and combine a meal with your discussions? If you have more than 6 members, discussion around a restaurant table can become difficult. The advantage is that no one has to cook or clean. However, my preference is a home setting where everyone feels more relaxed and can move about.
Why? If you love to read, meeting with like minded people is always enjoyable. You will expand your horizons by reading books you may have otherwise overlooked, authors you were not familiar with, or genres that do not usually land in your shopping cart. You will also get more out of the books when you discuss them with friends. Time spent reading is time well spent. Reading, along with social interaction, helps keep the mind sharp and stimulated.
